David Warner's Story

On the Summer Solstice 2026 (Sunday June 21st) myself and my son Spencer will be partaking in an 18 hour net session on the Little Knavesmire to raise funds for Ovington CC.Starting at 4am on the dot and finishing at 10pm, the aim for the day is to make sure that at any one time we are either bowling or batting throughout the duration. Whether you want to bring down some equipment and have a bat, or throw down some express pace you're more than welcome. This goes for adult players, juniors, friends, family or anyone passing-by on the day wanting to show off some cricketing skills.

Ovington Cricket Club is more than just a cricket club. Founded in 1928 with the explicit aim of providing cricket to those who did not have access, it has remained true to its ethos. Over 90 years later, we are now a vibrant pillar of our community, where over 200 members, aged 6 to 70+, gather to play, socialise, and support one another.

By being one of, if not the only team to play on public land in York, it brings some big advantages and also a few disadvantages. The one huge advantage that plays no small part in our success is our visibility and accessibility as a cricket club. 4 or 5 times a week every evening during mid-April until mid-September you will see the club represented on the Little Knavesmire, a large public field in the centre of York. We are friendly and approachable and this brings huge numbers of people to the club who recognise us for our inclusivity and also our competitive levels of cricket. The other side of this and disadvantage here is our pavilion. It is a converted WW2 observation corps building. Due to this, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the minimum standards outlined by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regulations. Therefore, this expansion is essential to the future of the club, as without it, we will cease to exist.

Any and all support / donations are welcome and will make a huge dent as we strive to reach our target which will allow us to extend and improve our pavilion.

Thank you.
